Rowan ‘Autumn Spire’
Mature size
4-8m tall; 1-1.5m wide
My favourite new discovery this year, so I planted one in my own garden.
A columnar deciduous tree, perfect for a small garden. White flowers appear in the summer. Bright green leaves turn red, orange and yellow in the autumn. Orange berries add to the show autumn, as well as feeding blackbirds and thrushes.
Witch Hazel

2.5-4m tall; 2.5-4m wide
A large deciduous shrub with striking ‘lemon zest’ flowers in winter. This is another of my favourites, and I planted one in my garden in 2025. Leaves turn reddish or yellow in autumn. It has a tidy V-shaped habit that requires no pruning, unless you need to keep it small.
Laburnum ‘Yellow Rocket’
Mature size
2.5-4m tall; 1-1.5m wide
A tall narrow tree with hanging clusters of bright yellow flower in summer. The leaves are formed of smaller leaflets, like its cousins: peas and clovers. Use this compact variety to add vertical interest to a smaller garden, or train the stems on a pergola or archway
Corkscrew Hazel
Mature size
2.5-4m tall; 2.5-4m wide
Large deciduous shrub with fairytale-like twisted branches that look stunning in winter. Yellow male catkins hang down in late winter and early spring followed by hazel nuts in late summer.
Himalayan Birch
(jacquemontii)
Mature size
18m tall; 4-8m wide
A vigorous deciduous tree, with brilliant white bark on the trunk and larger branches. Leaves turn yellow in autumn; yellow-brown male catkins hang down to 12cm long in spring.
Due to its large final size, it should only be planted where it has lots of space, unless you are comfortable cutting it down after enjoying it for 5-10 years.
Flowering Cherry ‘Amanogawa’
Mature size
4-8m tall; 2.5-4m wide
A columnar deciduous tree with pale pink flowers in late spring. In autumn the leaves are a blaze of orange and pinky-red.
Due to its narrow form it is suitable even for very small gardens.
Juneberry
(Amelanchier lamarckii)
Mature size
8-12m tall; 4-8m wide
A small tree that is often recommended on Gardener’s Questions Time, it always seems to be doing something interesting. Its young leaves emerge with a bronze colour, just as it’s white flowers open. These are followed by edible berries, which can be red, dark purple or black. The leaves turn orange and red in autumn.
